From the Principal

Welcome back to the first 5-day school week of 2024!

We are grateful to our whānau for making the first 8 days of school so successful by ensuring children were well prepared for the return to school, showing positivity about the new year which lay ahead, and making connections with new teachers and teams. We welcome the 65 new children who have joined us so far in 2024 and welcomed them officially with a school whakatau (welcome) on Monday 5th February.

Whānau Picnic

This year’s whānau picnic begins at 5.30pm on the school field. Traditionally, this is an amazing collective event which brings together our complete community in a social way, and is a wonderful way to mix, mingle and meet new people from within your child’s team. Bring along your picnic blankets, your food and refreshments, and enjoy being part of the PMPS community! The weather forecast looks good for a sunny, dry evening!

Access to Bucklands Beach Road through BBI is CLOSED

As previously advised, the pathway at the side of BBI is closed for safety reasons during their construction work. Please use Wells Road or Loloma Drive to access Bucklands Beach Road. We will advise you when this work is completed. If you have any questions about this restriction, please contact BBI directly.

Swimming Trials

We still have space for Y3/4 students who are interested in trialling for the school swimming team. Children should be confident at swimming 25m lengths in race situations- the trials are NOT swimming lessons. Children can be enrolled through KINDO where there are more details about the sessions. Y5/6 trials are now full.

PMPS Community Group

Something else to look out for at our whānau picnic is a leaflet drop and Community Group sign up sheet. This term we are looking for parents to volunteer to be involved in Road Patrol, School Lunches, Learning Assemblies, New Families Induction and Enviro Team.

Mental Health Education (using the MITEY approach)

Over the course of the term, we will take a snapshot to show how three different teams in our school teach mental health: Kauri, Titoki and Puriri. Look out for these snapshots in the upcoming newsletters.

At the foundation of the Mitey approach to mental health education is the Mana Model. Mana is related to one’s sense of belonging and connectedness, motivation to achieve, and personal and collective identity. We hope that the mana model shines through in our classrooms and our interactions with students, staff and community. You may like to watch this short video to learn more about the mana model (https://www.mitey.org.nz/about-mitey/the-mana-model).

Mental health education is primarily about learning rather than solving mental health issues. However the learning will over time have positive effects for tamariki in giving knowledge, skills and strategies for them to manage their mental health.
